For everyone currently indulging in the office siren and mob wife beauty trends, the beauty looks at Sergio Hudson would be a welcome addition to your mood boards. Backstage at the Sergio Hudson fall/winter 2024 runway show, a whirlwind of laughter and joy permeated the space as loudly and vibrantly as the bold beauty looks for the collection. With masterful suiting and corsetry designs, the accompanying makeup and hairstyles were imbued with the same balance of strength and softness we’d expect from Sergio Hudson.
To achieve this, Hudson called upon the greats. Makeup artist Sir John prepped the skin with the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder to create a flawless base. “This is really the hero product of this look. It’s a formula designed to look like skin, and I like to say it blurs out the distractions to bring out what’s real,” says brand founder Danessa Myricks.
With nods to the effervescent glamour of the ’70s, the makeup consisted of a modern smokey eye, as Sir John used the softer brown shades from the Groundworks Defining Neutrals Palette. “For each model, we used browns just a shade or two deeper than their complexion instead of black or grey for a more romantic shape to the eyes,” John explains. The key to the look, though, lies in the blush draping technique to evoke a subtle sensuality. After bringing the Yummy Skin Blurring Blam Powder Flushed upwards to the highest point of the cheeks, John created a curved shape towards the temples, resulting in a youthful, pinkish tint to offset the sultry eyeshadow. Then, the blush was brought down onto the chest, giving a sexy flush of color that made the makeup even more impactful. “The look was inspired by how much strength I saw in the wardrobe, but there was also this fluid femininity. For me, the look was about how to further uplift these women who were on the go, giving them that strength without stripping away their softness,” he said.
For hair, celebrity stylist and founder of The Hair Diagram, Tameka Gibson, went back to the basics to create the bouncy, voluminous hair that flowed as the models walked the runway. Using lace front wigs to keep the styles uniform, stylists gently blow-dried the Kenra Root Lifting Spray into the hair for extra texture before creating large barrel curls to smooth out the strands. The result was a fully polished blowout reminiscent of popular styles from the ’70s and ’80s.
As it all came together, the only thing more beautiful than the finished look was the love between Sir John and Myricks as they fawned over and celebrated each other’s success. Their admiration and joy were infectious and translated seamlessly into a beautiful look.
