There comes a time in every hotshot actor’s life when they run the risk of oversaturation. Oscar Isaac has now appeared in numerous mega-franchises over the course of a few short years, including Star Wars, Dune, and Marvel, first as a villain in X-Men: Apocalypse and now in a lead role for Disney+’s Moon Knight. The man is equally convincing as a greying university professor and as Timothee Chalamet’s dad. His next roles include a video game hero and a film legend. When it comes to Isaac, we need not concern ourselves over inundation. There is always, always room for more.
And so we come to Moon Knight, the latest in Marvel Studios’ slew of television series exclusive to the Disney streaming platform. Isaac will star as the titular hero, but beyond that, we only have a few essential details about the 2022 debut. Let’s break it down.
What is Moon Knight about?
It’d be easy to pin Moon Knight as a sort of Marvel-ized Batman, with the deep voice and eerie aura. But Marc Spector, a.k.a. Moon Knight, follows a dramatically different path than Bruce Wayne. A former U.S. Marine now working for the CIA, Marc experiences dissociative identity disorder, which means Isaac will need to embody numerous, distinct personalities. To make matters more complicated, upon discovering an ancient archeological dig site, Marc’s imbued with the powers of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. What that means for Isaac, in particular, remains uncertain—but he certainly won’t be your average military vet.
First introduced by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin in 1975, Marc’s considered one of the more adult Marvel heroes, which means Moon Knight the series could veer darker than the usual Disney+ fare.
When will Moon Knight release on Disney+?
Marvel has yet to announce a specific release date for the series, merely teasing that it’s “coming soon” in 2022.
Who’s in the cast?
So far, cast announcements have been few and far between, but we do know this: Isaac will star as Moon Knight, and Ethan Hawke will play an as-yet-unnamed villain inspired by the cult leader David Koresh, infamous for his leadership of the Branch Davidians and involvement in the Waco tragedy of 1993.
Other confirmed cast members include May Calamawy (Ramy) and Gaspard Ulliel.
Is there a trailer?
Not yet, but on November 12, Disney+ Day, the company did release a few seconds of footage from the new show. The short clip depicts a seemingly tortured Marc wrestling with both his multiple identities and his newfound abilities.
“I can’t tell the difference between my waking life and dreams,” he says, moments before a caped figure in white darts across the top of a building. It isn’t much to go on, but the video does give us a juicy glimpse at the raw energy Isaac will bring to this role—something the MCU, so often criticized for its shallow emotional range, desperately needs.
