The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aren’t known for sweeping public displays of affection—the royal family is notorious for keeping such gestures behind closed doors—but, sometimes, rare moments do slip through. Before rising COVID rates throughout England shifted the royals’ holiday plans this year, Kate Middleton hosted the Together at Christmas community carol service, where she sported a gorgeous red coat dress.
Although the event itself took place December 8, it wasn’t until British network ITV released footage of the service recording that eagle-eyed royal fans spotted a touching exchange between Prince William and Kate.
During a clip of artist Ellie Goulding singing “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” Kate glanced over at her husband to share a smile before coyly looking away. The gaze might not register as romantic if not for the obvious memories involved: Goulding performed Elton John’s “Your Song” at the couple’s wedding ceremony 10 years ago, in the same building where the carol service was recorded.

Although the royals will not be taking their usual trip up to the Sandringham Estate for Christmas this year due to COVID concerns, they plan to visit the queen at Windsor Castle.
Together at Christmas will air on ITV on Christmas Eve at 7:30pm GMT for British residents, and features performances from Leona Lewis, Tom Walker, Goulding, and more. In a joint statement released by the Cambridges, they explained the purpose of the special: “We will be reflecting on the extraordinary challenges we have faced in recent times and celebrating the acts of kindness that we have witnessed across the nation as communities pulled together to help each other and protect those in need.”
