Gal Gadot may play the powerful warrior goddess Diana Prince onscreen, but the Wonder Woman 1984 star has her own IRL superpower. “[Red lipstick] is something that runs in my family because my grandmother used to wear red lips,” Gadot tells ELLE.com. “My mom wears red lips every day. And I think it’s just something that I got used to growing up, seeing, having the women in my life wear red lips.”

Diana herself seems to be a fan of the beauty staple, sporting her fiery shade in the WW84 trailer. When she isn’t fighting off villains and saving the world, Gadot believes her character is a pro at applying lipstick. “Diana’s been living for years and years and years and years, so she’s excellent,” she says with a laugh. “These things come easy to her.” As for Gadot, her go-to red lip is a drugstore favorite. “I absolutely love Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Super Red,” she adds. “I love the shade, formula, texture. It never moves, and it’s easy to use.”

Wonder Woman 1984 was slated to premiere back in October but got pushed to December 25th due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On Christmas day, fans will be able to watch the film in select theaters and on HBO Max. Much like the rest of the world, Gadot is still processing the events of the past year, but is trying to stay positive.” Honestly, if you told me a year ago, I would’ve flipped out and told you, ‘no way,'” she admits. “But the truth of the matter is, we didn’t have a better solution. It wasn’t an easy decision, but the thought of families watching our movie on Christmas day warmed my heart, and the movie feels more relevant than ever. So I’m super excited that the time has come.”

In the new film, Diana takes on the year 1984, fully adjusted to life outside Themyscira. Once a fish out of water, Wonder Woman now understands humankind’s complexities and has gained some of her own experience in pain and suffering—Diana is still mourning the loss of her lover Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who died in the first movie. By now, fans know that Steve returns for the sequel after appearing in the trailer, but his revival is shrouded in mystery.

Gadot can’t say much about Pine’s reappearance but thinks audiences will be “surprised” by the film. “It was like coming back to my second home,” she says. “It was wonderful. [Chris, director Patty Jenkins, and I] experienced the first one together, and coming back to set to work with not only coworkers but friends is the best feeling one could ever ask for.”
