Disney+ is continuing to make our musical dreams come true. Hot off its release of Broadway sensation Hamilton and just before Beyoncé’s Black Is King, Disney+ is reportedly developing a Once On This Island movie. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that writer Jocelyn Bioh (She’s Gotta Have It, Russian Doll) will adapt the cult-favorite 1990 Broadway show. Wanuri Kahiu (Rafiki) is set to direct.
The musical, which was last adapted for a Broadway run in 2017, is based on the Rosa Guy novel, My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl. It tells the story of Ti Moune, a young Caribbean girl growing up in the French Antilles who falls in love with Daniel, someone of a higher socioeconomic class whom she saves from a car crash. The mystical gods that occupy her island aide her journey across the island to pursue her true love, waging a war against their societal differences.
Musical power producer Marc Platt (Broadway’s Wicked, La La Land, Aladdin) will help bring the musical to screen. Once On This Island, lyrics and book by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, originally debuted Off-Broadway in 1990 before heading to the Great White Way in 1991. While the show only ran a year during its first outing, a 2017 revival of the show won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and was nominated in eight other categories. The revival closed at the beginning of last year.
No further casting details or release date have been announced, although another listen to the stellar Original Broadway Cast recording is in order.
