A source told Us Weekly at the end of March 2019 that Carino wasn’t the best partner to Gaga—something echoed in the lyrics of “Fun Tonight.”
“Chris didn’t treat Gaga very well toward the end of their [two-year] relationship,” a source said. “He was jealous,” the source continued. “He was trying to find her all the time and texted her a lot. Her friends didn’t like him either.”
Gaga hinted her ex-partner was jealous in the lyric, “You love the paparazzi, love the fame / Even though you know it causes me pain.”
And she pondered why she remained in a relationship with him in the lines, “if I scream, you walk away / When I’m sad, you just wanna play / I’ve had enough, why do I stay?”
Gaga spoke about the significance of “Fun Tonight” during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe last week—and alluded to how she may have struggled during their breakup and end of the relationship. “In the middle of the record, [there’s] ‘Fun Tonight,’ which is a song that means a lot to me, and every time I listened to it, I get choked up because I can’t tell you how many nights that people that really love me were trying to get me to smile or laugh or be optimistic, and I just had no ability to be happy,” she said. “It just wasn’t there. But then I write this music and I would listen back and I’d go, ‘Why is that so fun? Why is that so happy?'”
