Lady Gaga’s new album Chromatica explores her journey of healing—including, it seems, from heartbreak. On her track “Fun Tonight,” Gaga sings about the moment a relationship she was in stopped being healthy (“Yeah, I can see it in your face / You don’t think I’ve pulled my weight / Maybe it’s time for us to say goodbye ’cause / I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you / I’m not havin’ fun tonight”). And while Gaga does not explicitly name who she was seeing, Gaga’s most significant split from her fiancé Christian Carino happened just last year.

Gaga and Carino, a talent agent, started dating in February 2017 and ended their engagement in February 2019. On March 12, 2019—just a month after the split news broke—she confirmed that she was working on Chromatica: “Rumors I’m pregnant? Yeah, I’m pregnant with #LG6,” she tweeted.
A source told Us Weekly at the end of March 2019 that Carino wasn’t the best partner to Gaga—something echoed in the lyrics of “Fun Tonight.”
“Chris didn’t treat Gaga very well toward the end of their [two-year] relationship,” a source said. “He was jealous,” the source continued. “He was trying to find her all the time and texted her a lot. Her friends didn’t like him either.”
Gaga hinted her ex-partner was jealous in the lyric, “You love the paparazzi, love the fame / Even though you know it causes me pain.”
And she pondered why she remained in a relationship with him in the lines, “if I scream, you walk away / When I’m sad, you just wanna play / I’ve had enough, why do I stay?”
Gaga spoke about the significance of “Fun Tonight” during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe last week—and alluded to how she may have struggled during their breakup and end of the relationship. “In the middle of the record, [there’s] ‘Fun Tonight,’ which is a song that means a lot to me, and every time I listened to it, I get choked up because I can’t tell you how many nights that people that really love me were trying to get me to smile or laugh or be optimistic, and I just had no ability to be happy,” she said. “It just wasn’t there. But then I write this music and I would listen back and I’d go, ‘Why is that so fun? Why is that so happy?'”

Verse 1:
Feelin’ something that I can’t explain
Think it’s a wound I still entertain
I’d do anything to numb the flame
I guess I’m just on fire these days
I can’t see straight, I can’t see me
There’s too much hurt caught in between
Wish I could be what I know I am
This moment’s hijacked my plansPre-Chorus:
I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you
I stare at the girl in the mirror, she talks to me tooChorus:
Yeah, I can see it in your face
You don’t think I’ve pulled my weight
Maybe it’s time for us to say goodbye ’cause
I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you
I’m not havin’ fun tonightVerse 2:
You love the paparazzi, love the fame
Even though you know it causes me pain
I feel like I’m in a prison hell
Stick my hands through the steels bars and yell
What happens now? I’m not okay
And if I scream, you walk away
When I’m sad, you just wanna play
I’ve had enough, why do I stay?
Pre-Chorus:
I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you
I stare at the girl in the mirror, she talks to me tooChorus:
Yeah, I can see it in your face
You don’t think I’ve pulled my weight
Maybe it’s time for us to say goodbye ’cause
I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you
I’m not havin’ fun tonightBridge:
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
I’m not havin’ fun tonight
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
I’m not havin’ fun tonightChorus:
Yeah, I can see it in your face
You don’t think I’ve pulled my weight
Maybe it’s time for us to say goodbye ’cause
I’m feelin’ the way that I’m feelin’, I’m feelin’ with you
I’m not havin’ fun tonight
