The 7 Coolest Hair Trends for Summer

Beauty

Hot Girl Summer 2.0 is just around the corner. But what will sunny days and warm weather mean for your hair? Celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins, who’s worked with the likes of Rowan Blanchard, Elizabeth Olsen, and Noah Cyrus, broke down the biggest trends for the summer, inspired by celebrities past and present. Do the likes of Zoe Kravitz, Mia Farrow, Rachel Greene, and Kim Kardashian-West inspire you? Do we even have to ask?

Below, seven hair trends that will make you look famous.

Crystalize It

Everyone and their sister went crazy for Euphoria-inspired makeup in 2019, going all-in on rhinestones and bold, bright colors. “In 2020, that trend is heading north towards your hairline, as your makeup becomes a bit more muted,” explains Hawkins. “A tiny pattern of crystals (applied with simple lash glue) along the hairline is a simple way to turn a ho-hum ponytail or bun into a moment.”

Red carpet examples include Lucy Boyton’s pearl center part and Alicia Keys’ baby hair embellishments. The perfect way to make a big hair splash with no commitment!

Go Geometric

“If your hair is curly, coily, or kinky and you’ve been rocking it naturally for the past couple of years, it might be time to take the plunge and go for a geometric cut,” says Hawkins. “We’re talking bold straight lines, A-line chops, or asymmetric shapes.”

Say goodbye to beachy waves and embrace the straighter side of things. “Overly curled hair, especially with straighter ends, is dated at this point,” explains Hawkins. “Instead opt for a shiny, healthy straight look.” Bonus points if you use a Goode shine spray like Color Wow’s Extra Mist-ical Shine Spray.

Strawberry Blonde

“As the backlash to the overly-bleached and ashy tones of the late twenty-tweens continues, the new It color emerges: strawberry blonde,” says Hawkins. “Warm hair colors have always been the most universally flattering across all skin tones, and strawberry blonde is no exception.” Everyone from Beyoncé and Drew Barrymore to Sofia Vergara and Adele have shown that strawberry blondes have more fun.

Hawkins notes that you should ask your stylist to warm you up a bit if you’re already blonde with some rich lowlights. And if your hair is starting darker, ask for some lighter honey highlights to begin.

With Gen Z’s obsession with Friends reaching a fever pitch, it makes sense that this iconic cut is making a comeback. “The 2020 iteration is a bit longer—think a few inches below collarbone—but still has tons of layers,” says Hawkins. “Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid both rocked versions of this style, and it’s going to be the cut of the summer.”

Ditch the dry bar waves (sorry Bachelor contestants!) and instead blow-dry your hair before setting with Velcro rollers for that bouncy, shiny, ’90s vibe.

“A modern twist on the classic Mia Farrow pixie cut is popping up everywhere,” says Hawkins. “Zoe Kravitz oscillates between short and long, but her short hair is iconic and a perfect example of how the modern Mia should be cut; short and full of texture.”

If this is the look for you, bring a few tips from Hawkins’ to your hairstylist. “Have your stylist use a razor or thinning shears to keep this look edgy and not venture into soccer mom territory,” he says. “You also want to invest in a good pomade to keep it shiny and piece-y.”

This look is for the young and young at heart who like to go bold. “Platinum blonde hair with a black under-layer is the edgy-girl style of the summer, replacing the greens, pinks, and blues of the past,” explains Hawkins. “Originally rocked by Christina Aguilera during her “Dirrty” era, the style, like all things early 2000s, is being brought back by generation Z.” Take one look at Dua Lipa to master the updated look in a chic way.
