The year in fashion.

The Lyst Index is a quarterly ranking of fashion’s top luxury brands and products, based on online shopping behaviours of over nine million fashion searchers, browsers and buyers. In its latest instalment for 2019, Q4, it looks as though shoppers were looking for trend pieces, with Gucci’s GG Logo Belt in the number one spot for women’s products, and the Maya puffer jacket from Moncler in first place on the men’s hottest product list.

As this report closes off a decade, Off-White keeps hold of the number one spot in hottest brands, thanks to the strong demand for its T-shirts, hoodies, sneakers and accessories, not to mention photo releases of Hailey Bieber’s Off-White wedding dress last fall. However, the brand’s creative director Virgil Abloh predicts that the death of streetwear is on the horizon. “Its time will be up,” he told Dazed in December. “In my mind, how many more T-shirts can we own, how many more hoodies, how many sneakers?” Regardless of how the landscape for fashion and streetwear changes in the future, though, Abloh’s creative direction is malleable to the industry’s changes—usually one step ahead, actually.

Continuing in brand rankings, Balenciaga and Gucci swapped spots from the last quarter, with Gucci clinching second place and Balenciaga falling to third. After Moncler’s launch of a carbon-neutral jacket made from plant-based materials, the outerwear label sits on the fourth place pedestal, just ahead of Versace who continues to hype us up with Jennifer Lopez and the iconic ‘jungle dress’ print.

After about a year and a half, Daniel Lee’s reshaping of Bottega Veneta is ushering the Italian fashion house into a greater spotlight as it moves up to 14 from 16 on the list. This comes after an even steeper climb last quarter, when the brand jumped from number 27 to 16.

And finally in Q4, Canada Goose made the list for the first time, sitting at number 18—a huge jump from its spot at 32 in the last quarter. According to the report, the rise can be credited to their reunion with Drake’s OVO brand for a ninth collaboration, plus the opening of a concept showroom in Toronto, which interestingly doesn’t hold stock.
