Trends are cyclical, so it’s no surprise that our favorite ’90s nail looks are having a come-back moment. French tips are still very much alive this winter season, but we’re also seeing the return of another throwback. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder and CEO of Olive & June, says that short dark nails–reminiscent our edgy Hot Topic days–is one of the biggest trends for winter.

“Short, dark ’90s nails are back!” she says. “We’re already seeing our clients reach for darker shades earlier than they have in winters past.” The trend can be worn with solid colors, but Gibson Tuttle recommends experimenting with shapes and negative space. Most importantly, your mani should embrace the moody colors of the season.

Ahead, Gibson Tuttle lists the five biggest winter nail trends to try now.

“Everyone is loving French manis right now (they are everywhere!) and we are also seeing a resurgence of the French Moon,” says Tuttle. “I love using a dark or metallic polish shade as a french tip or traced along the cuticle line.”

“Negative space manis have always been a simple way to add dimension,” explains Tuttle. “For winter we’re seeing a lot of creativity in color choice and the shapes you can create. I’m personally loving a metallic gold half moon mani.”

“Metallics are incredibly versatile whether you opt for a solid metallic mani, a mixed-metals ombre, a skinny French, or you can add a pop of art, i.e. mani-jewelry,” Tuttle recommends. “Rose Gold is currently our clients’ favorite metal shade.”
