We’re just over a week away from the 2020 BAFTAs kicking off in London, and the British Film Academy has issued some applause-worthy notes to celebrities surrounding red carpet dressing.
This year, the BAFTAs have teamed up with the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability to create a guide for stars to help them choose more sustainable options for their (brief) red carpet appearances. The guide encourages celebrities to re-wear a piece they have previously worn, to wear vintage or to choose a design by a designer/brand who focuses on sustainability in their designs. Suggestions include Stella McCartney, Reformation, Phoebe English and Rejina Pyo.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar UK, a spokesperson for BAFTA said, “Sustainability is very important to BAFTA and we’re doing more than ever before. The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment. From travel and food, to branding and materials, BAFTA is ensuring the awards are as sustainable as possible.”
Vintage has already been a popular choice on the red carpet this year, with Jennifer Aniston most recently choosing an archival piece from Dior for the 2020 SAG Awards. Kim Kardashian West and Cardi B have also both championed vintage pieces at various red carpet appearances over the past year.
Where once the idea of re-wearing a piece was unheard of (and actively avoided), celebrities have come around to the idea in recent years. Cate Blanchett has re-worn some of her red carpet dresses no less than three times over the years. Kirsten Dunst and Keira Knightley have also followed suit. Both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have also helped make strong cases for the re-wear, with both Duchesses regularly shopping their own wardrobes for high-profile events.
