Here Was Serena Williams’s Response About Good Friend Meghan Markle’s Royal Exit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s January has been a whirlwind since they announced they were stepping back from their duties as the royal family. In the wake of even more developments, such as the news that the Sussexes will give up their royal titles and official royal work, press is even more curious about things going forward.

Serena Williams is likely someone Meghan has confided in right now. She is a close friend of Meghan’s and was in attendance at her wedding in May 2018. She also hosted Meghan’s baby shower early last year in New York City. So when reporters had the chance to interview Williams after the Australian Open match she won against Anastasia Potapova on Monday, they opted to ask her about Meghan instead of tennis.

Per TMZ, a reporter in the press pool went right for the Markle question. “Your good friend, Meghan Markle, who attended your last two slams, and Harry, have taken a move, a stance that many people think is extraordinary and historic,” the reporter said, before asking: “What are your feelings about that? Have you spoken to her?”

Williams, who clearly knew she was going to get a question like this, was ready with her professional but firm response.

“Yeah, I have absolutely no comments on anything with that,” she said. “But, good try. You tried. You did good,” she said through a kind smile.

Today might not have been the right moment to ask Williams about her (almost ex) royal friend, but she has spoken about Meghan and their friendship in the past. In November 2019, Williams told Access Hollywood that Meghan is her g0-to friend to help her get through the highs and lows of life.

“She flew all the way with a newborn to see me play in New York and flew all the way back that night, and I probably couldn’t have done that,” Serena said, referring to Meghan’s visit to the U.S. Open in September of last year. “And that’s just one of the many things that she does for me. I call her, text her anytime, crying, upset—she’s always there. Doesn’t matter what she’s going through; she just sets time away, and she’s just so amazing.”
