National Treasure 3 Is Reportedly in the Works

Just when I had all but abandoned any movie-related news, it turns out there is a light at the end of the tunnel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Bremner, a writer on Bad Boys for Life, is working on a script for National Treasure 3, the third installment in the early 2000s adventure series starring Nicolas Cage.

Bremner is writing the script for Disney, and the project will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the first two movies in the franchise. There have been varying reports over the years about whether a third movie would come to fruition, and it seems like now it might actually be happening. Just this past November, Cage spoke to New York Daily News about the possibility of a third film, saying,I love those movies, and I love that character, but I don’t know. Your guess is as good as mine at this point. It’d be a lot of fun to do another one. I think there’s an audience for it.”

If you don’t remember the basic premise of National Treasure, let me refresh your memory: Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian who’s an expert at following cryptic clues in order to find hidden treasure, all while some sort of bad guy threatens him, his team, and the very values of these here United States. I mean, remember when Gates famously stole the Declaration of Independence in the first movie? It’s a hoot!

Some have pointed out that a potential plot line for the third film could involve the President of the United States’ book of secrets, which Cage finds in the second film. The book is said to include classified information about the biggest questions in American history, and during the movie, the President of the United States asks Cage to read page 47 of the book. However, the audience never finds out what’s on the page.

But also, like, maybe it’ll be about Trump! That could be fun, too.
