House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday evening that the House of Representatives will be moving forward with a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump, something many Americans have long waited to hear.

According to the Associated Press, the inquiry is focused on “whether Trump abused his presidential powers and sought help from a foreign government to undermine Democratic foe Joe Biden and help his own reelection.” A bit of background: A whistleblower filed a complaint that alleges President Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for help investigating former Vice President Biden and his son. (Trump has since authorized the release of the transcript of the call.) More importantly, shortly before the call, Trump blocked military aid to Ukraine, “prompting speculation that he was holding out the money as leverage for information on the Bidens.”

While Pelosi has been hesitant to move forward with impeachment proceedings in the past, she said on Tuesday that the “president must be held accountable” and “no one is above the law.”

President Trump, of course, began tweeting his reaction, calling the inquiry a “total witch hunt” and simply tweeting “PRESIDENTIAL HARASSMENT!” While Trump was going wild on his own timeline, people on Twitter did the same, starting the hashtag #ImpeachtheMF and whipping out every appropriate meme, GIF, and cultural reference.
