The Lyrics to Adele’s New Song, ‘Hold On,’ Go Deep

Culture

Adele shared a new song, “Hold On,” tonight during her One Night Only concert special and sent viewers into an emotional spiral. The deep but inspirational ballad, which will appear on her upcoming album 30, is loaded with lyrics that’ll stick with you (the kind you’ll be cry-screaming the shower). “Sometimes loneliness is the only rest we get / And the emptiness actually lets us forget,” she sings in the bridge.

Listeners are already feeling it.

During her sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, Adele delved into the meaning of “Hold On” in the context of her divorce, and where she was in life when she wrote it.

“My friends would always would say ‘hold on’ when I would feel like [how I felt] in the lyrics in the verse,” Adele explained. “But it was just exhausting to keep going with it. It’s a process. You know, the process of a divorce. The process of being single parent. The process of not seeing your child every single day wasn’t really a plan that I had when I became a mom. The process of arriving for yourself every single day, turning up for yourself every single day, and still running a home, running a business. So many people know what I’m talking about and I feel like that as well. I’ve juggled those things as well. And it just, I felt like not doing it anymore.

“And also trying to like, move forward with intention; not just to get out of it for no reason. My feet hurt walking through all of that concrete.

“I never questioned whether I’d made a bad decision. I never ever did, which I’m very grateful for. I never asked myself those questions. But it was just like, maybe it would’ve been better if I had just kept my mouth shut and carried on. Just in terms of hurting two people that I love most in the world.”

Read the lyrics to “Hold On” below:

Oh what have I done yet again?
Have I not learned anything?
I don’t want to leave in chaos
It’s like a ride that I want to get off

It’s hard to hold on who I am
When I’m stumbling in the dark for a hand
I am so tired of battling
With myself with no chance to win

Hold on
Let time be patient
You are still strong
Let pain be gracious
Love will soon come
Just hold, hold on

I swear to God I’m such a mess
The harder that I try, I regress
I’m my own worst enemy
Right now I truly hate being me

Every day it feels like the road I’m on
Might just open up and swallow me whole
How do I feel so mighty small
When I’m struggling to feel at all?

Just hold on
Let time be patient
You are still strong
Let pain be gracious
Love will soon come
Just hold, hold on

Sometimes loneliness is the only rest we get
And the emptiness actually lets us forget
Sometimes forgiveness is easiest in secret

So just hold on
Let time be patient
You are still strong
Let pain be gracious
Will soon come
If you just hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Just let time be patient
‘Cause you’re still strong
I’m still strong
Just be gracious
Cause love will soon come
If you just hold on

Just be patient, just be patient

You, just hold on
You, just hold on
You, just hold on
Just hold on
Just hold on
