One year ago, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were newlyweds after having an intimate secret ceremony at Cyrus’ Nashville house on December 23. Now, they’re almost legally single again. TMZ and Entertainment Tonight report the two have quietly settled their divorce, and papers were filed today by Cyrus’ lawyer. The two announced their separation in August, and Hemsworth filed for divorce days later.
TMZ reports the divorce was “marked by significant bitterness on both sides” (sources connected to Hemsworth or Cyrus painted different pictures of what happened to tabloids) but the two’s lawyers “were able to quietly work through the stumbling blocks and submit the paperwork to the judge,” as both Cyrus and Hemsworth are ready to move on. The two had a prenup, sources told TMZ, so dividing property was not difficult.
Entertainment Tonight was told similarly by its own source. “The couple had a prenup so dividing property wasn’t an issue; Miley will keep the animals in the divorce,” the source said. TMZ reports that it will be another three months until Cyrus and Hemsworth’s divorce becomes final, since that won’t happen until six months after the initial paperwork was filed. Hemsworth submitted that in August, so the two will be legally single in March.
Hemsworth and Cyrus have both moved on romantically: Cyrus is dating singer Cody Simpson, and Hemsworth is reportedly dating model Gabriella Brooks. The two have publicly had kind words for each other.
Hemsworth said, in his only statement on his and Cyrus’ breakup, “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets.”
And Cyrus said, in a series of tweets where she denied cheating is what ended their marriage, “Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will. BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar. I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger.”
